SponsoredYou are sitting in a hire car outside a church in Thessaloniki, the card is on your knee, and the pen has been hovering for five minutes. If you are wondering what to write in a wedding card, you are in good company. Most guests freeze at exactly this point, and the ones going to a Greek wedding for the first time freeze twice: once over the message, and once over whether to try a line in Greek.
The messages below are grouped by who is writing, so you can find your situation, copy a line and get back to the car park. There are Greek wishes with pronunciation and an honest note on what they actually mean, plus a short section on the thing nobody tells you: at a Greek wedding, the card is how the couple knows which envelope was yours.
TL;DR: Pick one line for your relationship, add one real memory, sign with your full name.
- At a Greek wedding, write «Να ζήσετε!» (na ZEE-se-te). It is the one wish everyone says.
- Don't write «Καλά στέφανα» to the couple. That one is for people who are not married yet.
- Never write the amount of money in the card, and never write "for the costs".
- Two or three lines are plenty. One true sentence beats a paragraph of clichés.

Greek wedding wishes, with pronunciation
If you only learn one, learn the first. A Greek grandmother will forgive the accent. She will not forgive Google Translate.
| Greek | Say it | What it means |
| Να ζήσετε! | na ZEE-se-te | "May you live (long and happily)." The standard wish to newlyweds. |
| Να ζήσετε ευτυχισμένοι! | na ZEE-se-te ef-tee-hee-SME-nee | "May you live happily." A little warmer. |
| Βίον ανθόσπαρτον | VEE-on an-THO-spar-ton | "A life strewn with flowers." Formal and old-fashioned, which is exactly why grandparents love it. |
| Συγχαρητήρια! | seen-ha-ree-TEE-ree-a | "Congratulations!" |
| Καλή ζωή μαζί! | ka-LEE zo-EE ma-ZEE | "A good life together!" |
| Με αγάπη | me a-GA-pee | "With love." For the sign-off. |
Language schools such as Omilo gloss «Να ζήσετε» as "May you live long!", and that is close. In practice it works like "here's to a long life together", said at the church door, at the table, and again at 2am on the dance floor.
Pro tip: If someone says «Και στα δικά σου» to you after you wish the couple well, they mean "and to your own wedding". It is a kindness, not a hint. Smile and say «ευχαριστώ» (ef-ha-ree-STO), thank you.
Wedding card messages to copy, by who you are
From close friends
"Να ζήσετε! I've watched you two become a team. Today everyone else gets to see it."
"From our first flat with the broken boiler to this. I couldn't be prouder of you."
"I'm so glad Kostas found you first. Να ζήσετε, both of you."
"You make each other braver. Never lose that."
"Here's to a marriage with as much laughter as our last road trip, and fewer wrong turns."
"Thank you for letting me stand close enough to see this day. I love you both."
From family
"Welcome to the family, officially. We have loved you unofficially for years."
"Watching you walk in today was the best moment of our year. Να ζήσετε!"
"May your home always be full, loud and happy, like the one you grew up in."
"With all our love on your wedding day, and every day after it."
From brothers and sisters
"I've known you longer than anyone in this room. I've never seen you this happy. Να ζήσετε."
"You stole my clothes for 20 years. I'm glad someone else gets your wardrobe now. Love you both."
From grandparents, or written to be read by them
"Βίον ανθόσπαρτον. May your life together be strewn with flowers."
"Να ζήσετε ευτυχισμένοι. We are blessed to have seen this day."
"Sixty years ago we stood where you stood. May you be as lucky as we were."
When you know only one of the couple
This one comes up again and again on Reddit's wedding boards, and the answer is simple: name the one you know, and welcome the other.
"Eleni has told me so much about you, Kostas. Now I see why she's smiling. Congratulations to you both."
"To the person who made my oldest friend this happy: thank you. Να ζήσετε!"
"I can't wait to get to know you as a couple. Congratulations!"
From colleagues and acquaintances
"Warmest congratulations on your wedding. Wishing you every happiness together."
"Congratulations from all of us at the office. Enjoy every minute of today."
"Συγχαρητήρια! Wishing you a long and happy life together."
When you can't be there
If you're sending a card to a wedding in Santorini you couldn't fly to, say so plainly and keep it warm.
"We're so sorry we can't be in Santorini with you. We'll be raising a glass at 7pm UK time. Να ζήσετε!"
"Missing you both today. Please save us a dance for when you're back."
"We may be 2,500 km away, but we're with you in spirit. Congratulations!"
Short ones, for a small card or a gift tag
"Να ζήσετε!"
"Save me a seat at your first anniversary."
"Να ζήσετε. Now go and eat."
"Καλή ζωή μαζί!"
"Ten years from now, I'll still be telling people about today."
Religious wishes
"May God bless your marriage with patience, and plenty of it."
"May the crowns you wore today remind you that you are each other's first priority."
That second one refers to the στέφανα, the joined wedding crowns of the Orthodox ceremony. If you want to understand what you'll see in the church, our guide to Greek wedding traditions walks through it.
The card is the envelope: what to know about cash gifts
At most Greek weddings, guests give money in an envelope rather than a gift from a registry. The card goes inside the envelope. Guests usually hand it over in the line of wishes after the ceremony, or drop it into a box at the reception.
The next afternoon, the couple sit down with 150 or 200 envelopes. A card signed "Love, H" is a mystery. A card signed "Fiona Clarke (Eleni's friend from Bristol)" is a thank-you note waiting to happen, and our wedding thank you messages help the couple write it. Write your full name, both names if you're a couple, and the names of children if the gift is from the family.
Two things not to write: the amount, and anything that frames the money as a payment ("towards the costs", "hope this covers our plates"). How much to give is a separate question, and our guide to being a great wedding guest covers registries and gifts in more detail.
Pro tip: Seal the envelope and write your name on the outside too. Envelopes get separated from cards in the excitement. As one commenter on r/greece put it, in the chaos of a wedding it's very easy for a few envelopes to go missing.
How to choose the right message
Start with your relationship. Closer means more personal. A colleague's card can be one line. Your sibling's should include something only you would know.
Add one true detail. A place, a year, a joke you both still use. "From our first flat with the broken boiler" will be remembered long after "wishing you every happiness" is forgotten.
Think about who else will read it. Greek cards are often opened with family around, and some get read aloud. Skip jokes about divorce, ball-and-chain lines and anything about the in-laws. And skip "Finally!", which reads as a dig even when you mean it kindly.
Mix languages only if you're sure. One Greek line written properly, plus two lines in English, is the sweet spot. A whole card in machine-translated Greek reads oddly, and the family will notice.
If you're the couple: making cards and wishes easier
If you're the ones getting married, guests will ask what to write, where to put the envelope, and whether there's a box. Put the answer somewhere they'll actually look, along with the schedule and the map. Your wedding RSVP page is the page guests open to reply anyway.
Some couples also want the wishes from guests who couldn't travel. A digital guestbook lets them leave a message and a photo from their phone, and it sits next to the cards from the night. We've written more about how a digital wedding guestbook for wishes and photos works in practice, including for guests who don't love apps.
Answer the envelope question before anyone asks
A first-time guest at a Greek wedding is decoding a ceremony in a language they may not speak and an envelope custom nobody explained. Each thing you answer in advance is one message you won't get the week before, and one guest who walks in relaxed.
Put the timings, the directions and a line about the envelope box on the same page your guests use to reply. You can send your invitations and collect replies from a single WhiteClover link and watch the answers arrive as people open it.
FAQ
What do you write in a Greek wedding card?
The safest and most loved line is «Να ζήσετε!» (na ZEE-se-te), meaning "may you live long and happily". Add one or two personal lines in your own language and sign with your full name.
Can I write in English at a Greek wedding?
Yes. Most couples will be delighted, especially if you add one Greek wish. If grandparents don't read English, a short Greek line at the top means everyone gets something.
Should I mention the money in the card?
No. Put the cash in the envelope with the card, but don't write the amount or refer to costs. Do write your full name so the couple know who it's from.
Is «Καλά στέφανα» a wedding wish?
Not for the couple getting married. It wishes someone their own future wedding, so it's said to engaged couples and to unmarried guests. The newlyweds get «Να ζήσετε».
How long should a wedding card message be?
Two to four lines is ideal. One wish, one personal detail, one sign-off. Long letters are lovely, but they're better saved for a separate note.
